Day 3 - Bilbao- Getting artsy

Just after getting to bed last night we think we hear the thunder start, it doesn't sound quite right though so I take a look out of the window.

Turns out we get to see a few minutes of a firework display down in the town so that was fun although probably not for the people stood in the rain to watch it.

Luckily for the Dutch lads they had managed to squeeze by the side of the car that had also spent the night along with an articulated lorry so it had turned out to be quite a popular sleeping spot.

Our plan had been to stay at the campsite and get the bus down to the Guggenheim Museum but as it happens Al has found some motorhome parking at the football stadium that's a short walk away. It's even free on Sundays and works out so much better. It did take us slightly longer to drive there however as the most direct route involved a tunnel that we're too big for. It is strange having to think about such restrictions these days.

The children are in a pretty chirpy mood and surprisingly excited about visiting an art museum. Along the walk we do pass by some beautiful gardens with a lovely covered play area, even that is artistic with the climbing structure shaped as a dragonfly. We let them have a few minutes but not so long they tire themselves before we've even started.

Al and I came here years ago so do remember some of the permanent structures like the spider and the vast steel spirals, the kids love exploring these.

They are able to interact and touch rather than just looking at the art from a distance.

One room was dedicated to a Japanese artist who drew pictures of children, many of whom were sad or grumpy, Liliya wasn't too impressed when we likened her having a grump to one of the pictures though.

We did ask them to choose their favourites and Liliya went for one girl with blood dripping from her holding a knife with a broken flower on the floor, hmm OK little one!

There was a nice section of art pieces from a local school, which got our kids talking about what they would have done.

Robert was looking forward to the pop art section having studied Andy Warhol at school last year and I have to say I did have a proud mum moment when he correctly picked out the two pieces that he had done.

They both really got into using their cameras to take pictures and it was nice to see them actively engaging.

We weren't impressed with a German artist, Martha, and gave us a chance to chat with the kids about the subjective nature of art. Robert did ask if a child had drawn it, to be fair I think Robert himself could produce better pieces!

On the top floor there was a selection of pieces from their archives along with an infinity room where you got to experience being inside for 30 seconds.

We also caught a bit of live interpretive dance whilst we waited for our turn to visit the interactive room. We were there for 3.5 hours so I was really impressed we didn't have any moaning about being hungry given I hadn't packed lunch as we figured we'd just eat back at the moho.

We spotted a souvenir shop just outside the museum and decided to add a sticker to our moho, we've not actually put any on after the drama we've had, we still weren't sure if we'd be keeping the moho after this trip and after putting all the stickers on the last van only to sell it a week after getting home it felt like a shame. We think we will keep Mario as we're not sure we'd get what we need in a van versus a moho but we'll wait until the end of the trip to make a decision. Anyway we also found a bauble even though I'm really not sure we have any more room, we may just have to have 2 trees this year 🎄😜.

Next door was the poshest ice cream shop I've ever seen, it had chandliers on the ceiling and the ice creams were shaped like flowers. No surprise Liliya chose all chocolate whilst Robert favoured the sorbet flavours of mango, vanilla, strawberry and lemon. I wasn't going to have one myself but how could I resist the poshiest ice cream shop! I chose dulce de leche, lemon with mint and noisette, delicious!

Of course Liliya didn't even stay clean before leaving the shop.

As if the ice cream wasn't enough we managed to find a street full of foodie treats and there was another stop at the bakery for a Spanish version of the pastel de nata.

On the way back to the moho I joked about whether the kids wanted to go to another art museum that we were about to walk past, much to my surprise, especially since they knew we'd be going back past the park, Liliya said she really wanted to. Sadly, or not, the place was closing in 15 minutes so they wouldn't let us in. Liliya wasn't too happy but we promised there would be more museums on the trip 😂.

We let the kids have another 10 minutes in the park on the way back to the motorhome and by the time we got back they still had room for a picnic lunch.

It's just over a two hour drive down to Termas de Arnedillo which are some natural hot springs.

Al has located a picturesque stop in the mountains just a 15 minute walk away so that's our plan for the morning.

The site is basic but cheap and has several picnic tables well placed outside the moho which was a perfect place to have our dinner al fresco.

Robert made friends with a cute little cat which he then wrote about and did a lovely drawing.
