Lake Skadar

We awoke to a beautiful blue sky and enjoyed a very chilled morning. I went for a 5k run before the heat got too much but even at 9am it was still roasting.

Other than that the kids played frisbee, dobble and we had time to catch up on more washing. We enjoyed some ice cream at the mini on site bar after lunch, ensuring everyone stayed in the shade.

We've got a boat cruise on the lake booked for 4pm so headed down an hour early to make sure we could find parking, which took a while but we eventually did so we had time to get a drink.

On the boat the kids kept asking when we could go swimming, I tried explaining that this was a 3hr tour and we won't go swimming until the very end but that didn't kerb their excitement.

70% of Lake Skadar is in Montenegro and the rest in Albania. It's a hugely important lake with over 350 species of birds, many using it as a spot to rest during the migration from Africa. Not sure how many types of birds we saw but there were plenty of different types that we spotted.

We chose a smaller boat, similar to the one pictured so that we could get right inside the small gaps between the lily pads.

Shortly into the journey the adults are offered some of the local wine to try and we each get to try priganice which are essentially Montenegrin donuts that are served with honey, jam or cheese. We got to try ours with honey and the kids took out to heart when the driver said to go back for seconds.

There are two different spots the boat can visit depending on conditions. One is called alcatraz of Montenegro and the other is Kom monastery. We're taken to the latter which is a tiny little place but a great stop for getting some beautiful pictures.

The kids also make friends with the island cat and are sad when we have to leave.

The second we're back on the boat the kids are desperate to get into their swim wear and eagerly await the moment we stop for the swim.

By now the sun had gone in slightly so I was worried the moment they got into the water they'd want to get out again but it was actually a really comfortable temperature.

We had about 15 minutes of swim time and the kids weren't happy about having to leave, Liliya even suggested we just swim our way back but the promise of another donut sweetened the deal.

It was now 7pm so we took the opportunity to enjoy a meal in the village, which had become a lot less busy. We decided we'd actually eat local food tonight and started with a plate of local meat and cheese followed by some huge prawns for me.

The kids wanted dessert but they were way too tired and needed bed, plus they'd had the donuts so we headed back to camp.

Annoyingly someone nearby (not on camp) was having a party with ridiculously loud music. I was worried the kids wouldn't get to sleep but they were out quickly due to the exhaustion from the heat, I gave in around 10pm and went to sleep too, thankfully so tired I slept through it. Al said it was still going on when he went to sleep at 11 so I was tempted to send the kids out to play with spoons and pans when they woke up before 6am 😜
