Ostend beach day

Turns out the kids weren't the best come bedtime so now we're working on the principle that they must be on best behaviour to earn back beach time. Of course in all honesty what else are we going to do with our day but they don't know that so the two of them become very helpful making a picnic and tidying up. There's no rain planned for the day so we trek down with all our stuff hoping to find some beach gear in a shop en route however despite being told by the owner all the shops open Sunday this clearly isn't the case so once we're down the sea front I look for the most basic looking bucket and spade which isn't going to cost the earth. Things start out well, we set up camp and the kids run straight for the sea, it's 23c so a much better temperature than the past couple of days given we aren't sun worshippers.

Within about 30 mins however it's clear than it's going to be a windy day and soon a parasol comes flying towards us at which point everyone around starts taking theirs down too. This is a beautiful beach though with so much space and when the kids aren't in the sea they are getting the most out of the 4€ bucket and spade. Me I'm actually sat wrapped up in a towel though with my t-shirt back on as I'm really feeling the cold. Al is chilling out reading his book when I discover rather than using the bag of towels and clothes as a head rest he's been using the picnic bag so my cheese and onion crisps are nothing more than crumbs come lunchtime!

I know I've mentioned it before on our trips but give the kids something fun to do and food is the last thing on their mind, in fact getting them to take 5 mins to eat their lunch is a bit of a struggle. I'm honestly not sure how they aren't freezing in the sea even though Al who's gone in to join them promises me it isn't that cold, hmm think I'll stay right here with my towel thank you. With a complete rest day it's fun to do some people watching, what I did find odd is the mother and son who started by sitting right in front of our view of the sea (and watching the kids), ok I guess it may not have been obvious but what was even more strange was that as the tide came in and they had to relocate they chose to do it right behind us. Now the beach is huge and there was plenty of space. Even my own kids were further away digging a hole as I didn't want the sand blowing into us, anyway very odd indeed (their chair can be spotted in the background below)

After several hours of wave jumping, shell collecting and sand digging we headed back to get ready to go out. We had no food given the shops weren't open and it seemed like a waste not to try out the local seafood when this town is famous for it. We headed down towards the marina in search of a nice restaurant, after all I'm hoping as fine as this place is we have no reason to return in the future. We see a few places but nothing that jumps out, the kids soon start to get restless when we turn a corner and see people tucking into big plates of seafood. We decide this is the place then get told they are fully booked and only outdoor seating is available. We hover about for a few minutes and thankfully a couple were just leaving. The kids aren't happy at all about being here, apparently they don't like seafood so I bribe them with chips and an ice cream if they be quiet and let me enjoy lobster!

After a short chat with the waiter though he recommends the freshly made fancy fish bites and actually they are a winner!

I got to wear the very sexy lobster bib much to the amusement of the rest of the family. Despite the kids actually really enjoying their meal now they still insist on the ice cream so we wander down to the seafront where Robert gets to try cuberdon flavour, it's a speciality sweet they make here in the shape of a cone, we've tried them on a previous visit and quite hard to describe the flavour. We wander back to the apartment and hope that tomorrow work will recommence on the moho and we can start making our way home.
