Szeged & Leaving the EU

Not much of interest to write about today but after staying at the horror movie site I figured I better check in 😜.

The night was another wet one but it's dry by the time we wake up. No sign of any sun though and it's significantly colder than the last couple of days. Typical when there's a huge outdoor pool area but at least there is lots to do inside as well.

On the drive out of the site we can see why its a bird watching area, we see lots of different types of birds plus many large rabbits or hares and even a deer crosses our path.

Before we get to the pool we decide to stock up on food at the local tesco since this evening we'll be in Serbia. One thing I've noted, which I'm now curious if this is just something we have in the UK, but no one sells multi packs of crisps or even single portions. We find them useful for our picnic lunches each day but all we can find are large sharing bags. Salt and vinegar flavour also don't exist much to the disappointment of the kids.

Also interesting is how many items are labelled in English yet they aren't sold in England. Crinkle cut crisps for example are called Wavy chips. I do wonder if this makes it easier to sell them in nearby countries without having to change the packaging since the ingredient list on the back is in 4 languages and hence choosing a neutral language for the main name makes it possible.

Aquapolis claims to have the largest all year round water slide in Europe. Al and I tried it as the kids are too small (not really sure why Robert couldn't since he can swim and it's really gentle and slow) and it took about minute to get down with it being 272m long. I'm a bit dubious of the claim since Germany claims to have a longer slide but maybe that's not used all year long?

There were plenty of different pools and slides to keep everyone entertained. At some points we were the only people in the outdoor pool because it's really not that warm but at least that meant there were zero queues for those slides.

From the pool we had 1hr 45 to get to our campsite just outside Belgrade in Serbia. If only, 20 minutes into the trip and we were at the border. Ended to taking 3hrs 15 to get through!!! There were two choices of border crossing, the motorway or the old road. Research online suggested the old road was the better option and it's also the one Google suggested. By the time it got to our turn we were convinced they must be turning the cars inside out given how long things were taking but no, perhaps 2 minutes leaving Hungary (with a gross border control guy smoking on the job and not caring about the smell getting into the van), he didn't even check to see the kids since you can't see them from the outside. The Serbian chap was much more friendly but again only took a few minutes, I had to get out and open the door to show him the kids. He looked in the van and said 'I see you have just 2 terrorists in here 🤣'

I had really wanted to get to the camp in time to run along the Danube but that wasn't going to happen so I ended up doing 3*1 mile runs up and down the line of cars, I think people thought I was crazy.

Each of the three times I ran I noticed different cars had given up waiting, perhaps they decided to try the motorway border instead. It wasn't far but we could hear the beeping of horns from that direction so I don't think it was much better. Really hope that's the worse of the borders since we've got 6 more to get through as part of the trip.

In the queue I did end up speaking to some Ukrainian ladies that were also waiting to cross the border, sadly despite 500 days of learning the language I was completely at a blank as to how to start a basic conversation after the word hello 😒

Once across the border the roads were completely empty, not surprising since no one was getting let through quickly.

We spotted a familiar sign of the golden arches and grabbed a bite to eat, at least the kids got food into them and we did try different burgers we'd never seen on a menu before.

A security guard had to let us on site and it's rather busy, there's lots of different number plates, I've even spotted one from Kuwait!
