Dubrovnik

Today is hot, even at the start of the day were already sweating as we get off the bus at the old town. We've opted to get the three day city pass as its the same price as the city walls alone so unlike some city passes that aren't worth it this one really is and it's only €10 more for 2 extra days. We go for the city wall walk first whilst the kids have still got most of their energy but even I'm struggling with all the stairs climbing in this heat. We have to bribe the kids with items from the snack bag to keep them going and we even found an ice cream shop at the very top of the first part of the walk so we decide it's definitely needed.

It seems to give the kids the boost we need to get around the next section before we find another good photo opportunity plus a little rest in the shade.

You can see why everyone recommends the city walls walk, there really were some incredible views, you can also see why people say come out of summer season as its busy and crazy hot.

Along the walk there are a couple of museums we get to visit. One is of a local artist and another is the maritime museum. There's enough to keep the kids entertained plus it's a welcomed relief from the heat.

There are plenty of church's to visit around the old town and even the cathedral is free to enter so we visit a selection and light a couple of candles to remember those who are no longer with us.

We visit another art museum with an interesting exhibit showing aerial photos of Catalonia and get some ideas of places we might add to next year's trip after we see the Olympics in Paris (a rough plan is already in motion but need some recovery time from this trip first). We also visit the museum of the most famous playwright in Croatia.

Next up is Rector's Palace, there's a great selection of artifacts to explore including coins, jewellery, carriages, furniture and weapons to name just a few. They also have an augmented reality app where figures from the past tell stories and the kids loved listening to those. There's also an interesting collection of photos from the Homelands war in the early 90s. It's quite terrifying to see the destruction that happened in our own lifetime and read the stories from those that survived.

We then stopped at a jazz café for a drink, sadly the mojito wasn't a great example despite the hefty price.

Until today Al didn't realise that Game of Thrones was filmed here and we were just around the corner from the jesuit stairs. Perhaps the 'Shame mojito' they sold there would have been better.

We have time today for one more museum so opt to visit the ethnographic museum. The nice thing about the city pass is that there's no way we'd pay to just come here but as its already included we can take a short visit and spot a few interesting things.

We find a nice spot to have an early evening meal and tell the kids if they can be quick and behave that we'll go on a sunset pirate cruise. Liliya was flagging by this point but around 5 minutes after ordering her pasta she falls asleep. I can't really blame her, I'm massively impressed with their stamina in this crazy heat so we let her have a tactical short nap so she can stay awake for the cruise. Robert was weirded out by my black pasta when it arrived but after trying it in a creamy prawn sauce he thought it was incredible and wants his own when we eat in Italy.

Despite Liliya being all about the unicorns, glitter and pink she loves pirate stories so the idea of going on a real pirate ship was mind blowing. We had a short while to wait and Robert declared he had found the best ice cream shop in the world so we just had to have some 😂

As the pirate ship came into the harbour the kids were super excited.

They raced to the top to sit by the wheel and delighted in playing captain. It was interesting to hear how the fortress at the top of the hill above the old town had played its part in saving the city back in the 90s and about the cursed island.

We successfully got back to the campsite in the bus and in order to let the kids wind down we got out the blanket and did some star gazing.

Tomorrow we will finish off the rest of the museums then try get back after lunch so the kids can have another afternoon at the beach.
